Local Melon Bike Benefits is a small-business led effort in Holland, Michigan that encourages safe, non-driving transportation alternatives by offering discounts to customers who commute by bicycle and protect their melon!


Participants in the program believe there is both a practical & playful value in more-active, less-congested commuting.

While it may not be possible for everyone in Holland to access downtown this way, Local Melon exists to encourage new & safe habits among those who can.

  • As the number of individual and business members increases, so too will the incentive to commute and the broader culture around it.

  • Q: What does it cost to be a business member?

  • A: Businesses can join the program for free, but we suggest a contribution of $20 each year you participate to help cover the costs of ordering stickers and hosting this website.

  • Q: What do I do with the proceeds from sticker sales?

  • A: You get to keep all the proceeds from your sticker sales!

  • Q: Are cyclists the only ones who qualify for discounts?

  • A: No. Any non-driving activity (skateboarding, roller-blading, scootering, etc.) can qualify, so long as a helmet is worn. Pedestrians do not qualify for the discount at this time.

  • Q: How long are the stickers valid?

  • A: 2026 stickers are valid until 12/31/2026.

  • Q: What sort of discount should I offer?

  • A: Discounts could be percentage based, loyalty-points based or specific to a particular product/service. It's completely up to each business what they would like to offer and for how long.
